I love doing solo concerts. There is something about playing on your own that you never quite get when performing with an ensemble. Being completely left to your own devices, no safety net and yet having all the musical freedom you could ever wish for. Much more than with an ensemble, playing solo is always about work in progress.
Every time I do a solo gig I find new ways to play the music, ways that sometimes lead to musical concepts I hadn't thought of before. These concepts then find their way into the repertoire which is always expanding. Besides my own material and arrangements I love to play pieces by Monk, Ellington, The Beatles, pretty much anything that I can make work. It's the ultimate challenge for any musician, and I love it.
